Letters of recommendation
I’m almost always happy to help students and alumni with letters of recommendation / support. The only exception to this is if I don’t think I’m the right person to write them. Here’s what I need from you if you want me to write you a letter:
- Two weeks notice (or as much notice as possible)
- Job listing / position announcement (or info on scholarship / fellowship opportunity, etc.)
- Your current resume / curriculum vitae
- A note describing why you are interested in this opportunity in particular (not just generally) and why you think you’re a good fit
- Complete contact info for the person to whom I should send the letter
-
Salutation (Dr., Mr., Mrs., or Ms.?)
-
Name
-
Title
- Name of organization
- Mailing address
- Phone number (if possible)
- Fax number (if possible)
- E-mail (if possible)
-
If you’re just using my name as a reference, I don’t need all of this stuff. However, send me at least the job listing, your resume, and a note so that I sound halfway intelligent when someone calls me on the phone! In other words, help me help you…
